Research Paper – Outline
I.
Introduction
a. Opener: Introduce a walk-through of a typical day,
and media propaganda seen. Examples of magazines,
flyers, posters, TV shows and commercials.
Also include facts and figures from sources showing how prevalent the
advertising industry is and how much emphasis is put on media that children are
exposed to.
b. Thesis: Children are impressionable and absorb much
of what they see around them. The
advertising industry uses this to an advantage, promoting products and services
through the idealization of perfection and immediate results. The paper will argue that the advertising
industry has targeted a new clientele, the younger generation, because of how
easily it is may be manipulated.
II.
Child Development
a. Introduce
what specifically is meant by child development, how the environment and
upbringing effect the person. Explain
how and why child development is so important in the context of this paper.
b. Include
some of the sociological research such as Piaget’s work and Lareau’s
observations and conclusions
c. Apply
relevance in what media is public and what children observe on a day to day
basis
III.
Media Propaganda
a. Expand
on facts, figures, and statistics about the advertising industry and social implications.
b. Blast
to the past with references on what the advertising used to be, what target
audience used to be, versus what it is now and who target audience is now.
c. Give
examples of companies that target young audiences, and explain more in depth
the type of advertisements they produce and what they mean. Also explain why these advertisements are appealing
to younger people and what they absorb from them.
IV.
Perfection and Impatience
a. Relay
how these two traits are advertised, what they look like, how they are
promoted, and how they are targeted to children.
b. Explain
how children draw conclusions based on viewing ads, as well as how often they
are seen and play more so on the subconscious than the conscious
acknowledgement.
c. Children,
especially those of younger ages, are very influential on parents. They develop ideas and notions about what
they need or what they need to be based on what they see in advertisements of
all sorts and pressure parents to provide or produce.
V.
Alternative View
a. Present
notion that advertising is manipulative and children are just more exposed
because of access to social media, internet, etc
b. Perfection
and immediate results may be the ideologies gathered by children based on what
they see and what they hear from those around them as opposed to the
advertisements specifically relaying those qualities.
VI.
Conclusion
a. Make
a point to emphasize difference between advertising then and advertising now
b. Reiterate
importance in child development, factor of innocence, etc
